What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable products that are used to help eliminate the lines, wrinkles and folds caused by loss of facial volume that occurs as part of the natural aging process.

Over the years the fat in our face atrophies, causing a slow deflation of the upper and mid-face. At the same time our hyaluronic acid and collagen levels in the skin diminish, contributing to the formation of wrinkles.

The dermal fillers that Dr. Plant uses are injectable gels made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally produced compound similar to what the body has lost, to plump up deflated areas and soften facial lines, like the nasolabial folds and marionette lines. Dermal fillers can also help to get rid of eye bags or enhance facial features such as your lips, cheeks, and jawline by adding volume for fullness and definition.

Am I the right candidate for dermal fillers?

If you are looking to reduce wrinkles of the face or restore lost volume you may be a candidate for dermal fillers. Filler is available for both men and women seeking minimally invasive solutions to restore or improve their aesthetic appearance.

A consultation with Dr. Plant is necessary to determine if dermal fillers are the right treatment for you. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have an allergy to hyaluronic acid (HA) products, then you should not undergo treatment with HA-based dermal fillers.

What dermal fillers does Dr. Plant offer?

Dr. Plant offers several different types of dermal filler for different areas of the face, but works mostly with fillers in the Restylane Emervel Collection. This is a premium line of fillers that uses XpresHAn Technology to allow for better integration and flexibility with facial movement than previous generations of HA fillers. This line includes Restylane Refyne, Restylane Defyne, Restylane Volyme, and Restylane Kysse.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Dermal Fillers Safe?

All dermal fillers used by Dr. Plant are approved by Health Canada.

How can I decide if dermal fillers are right for me?

All patients will have a complimentary initial consultation with Dr. Plant where he will review your concerns and goals so that you can work together to develop your own personalized treatment plan. Before proceeding with treatment everything will be explained to you and you will have an opportunity to review an informed consent with Dr. Plant explaining all the risks and benefits of your treatment.

What can I expect from a dermal filler treatment?

Once you and Dr. Plant decide on the right product(s) for you, there are certain treatment steps you can expect. To help keep you comfortable during treatment, Dr. Plant may apply a light anesthetic cream to the numb the desired areas prior to injection. He will then inject the product(s) with a few short injections that last only a few seconds each. He will then massage the area to help integrate the product into your tissues and smooth the area. Your appointment should not take longer than an hour, depending on the amount of treatment needed.

Does the treatment hurt?

The injections do not hurt but may be uncomfortable for some patients. Before beginning treatment, Dr. Plant may apply a light anesthetic cream to the numb the desired areas prior to injection. Ice can also be used post treatment to minimize discomfort and bruising. The dermal fillers Dr. Plant uses contain lidocaine ( a local anesthetic) to further numb the area as the treatment is taking place.

What are the common side effects?

The most common side effects are a slight redness, swelling, tenderness, minor bruising and itching sensation in the treated area. This is normal and generally disappears within a few days. Minor bruising or redness can usually be covered up with makeup. Occasionally you may feel lumps in the area that the product was injected but these will resolve within 7 days in nearly all cases. The risk of bleeding and bruising at the injection site is increased if you are using substances such as acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin®), ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®), prescription blood thinners, some herbal supplements such as fish oils and omegas, green tea or alcohol. A complete list of side effects and possible adverse reactions for this service will be provided and reviewed prior to initiating any treatment.

How can I minimize the risk of bruising?

Stop taking ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®) and natural products such as fish oils and omegas, green tea or alcohol 2-3 days before your procedure. If it is safe to do so, stop taking acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin®) 2 weeks before your injection. 2-3 days before your procedure we suggest that you take arnica montana homeopathic pellets as directed on the package and continue for 3-5 days after your procedure. You can also further minimize bruising by eating a bromelain containing food, such as pineapple, daily for 2-3 days before and after your treatment. If Dr. Plant thinks you are at high risk of bruising he will also provide you with an ice pack to use after the treatment.

Who will be doing my treatment?

Dr. Plant performs all injections himself, he does not delegate to a nurse practitioner or a medical aesthetician. He firmly believes the best results are delivered by someone who knows the anatomy inside and out, and no one knows it better than someone who operates on faces regularly.

How will I look after treatment?

During your consultation Dr. Plant will watch your face carefully to understand your expression and how you move, as well as how you look at rest. He will tailor your treatment by choosing the right products to meet your goals. The result is the natural, refreshed and relaxed ‘look’ you want. No overinflated faces, no trout pout, no duck face!

When will I see results and how long will they last?

You will be able to see results immediately after treatment. Dermal fillers last between 6 and 12 months on average, however the Restylane Emervel Collection that Dr. Plant uses tend to last longer than the average. Some may last as long as 18 months depending on the area, amount injected, and your individual metabolism. Unfortunately there is no method to predict exactly how long fillers will last so results will vary from person to person.

Do dermal fillers travel elsewhere in my body?

Dermal fillers remain where they are injected. Overtime the hyaluronic acid is metabolized by the body and you will pee out the metabolites.

What happens if I stop treatment? Will my wrinkles be worse?

Since dermal fillers are not permanent, if you stop your injection appointments, you will eventually return to where you started. If you have been treated by other injectors and used fillers to ‘overinflate’ certain areas then the skin may be looser than when it started. If Dr. Plant has been your only injector then he wouldn’t have allowed you to do that.

How much will treatment cost?

Every patient is truly unique with a different skin type, facial structure and aesthetic treatment goals. A personal, complimentary consultation will allow Dr. Plant to provide you with a treatment recommendation and its associated cost based on the number of syringes required.

Why is Dermal Filler sold by the syringe? Why doesn’t Dr. Plant do half syringes?

To ensure the highest quality and safety standards, all Health Canada approved dermal fillers are packaged as sterile, pre-loaded syringes. Dr. Plant does not offer half syringes because once the syringe is open it is no longer sterile and should be used immediately.
