Top 4 Ways to Prepare for Post-Op Recovery after Breast Augmentation

When women undergo breast augmentation, they are so busy preparing for this life-changing procedure that some forget to prepare for the post-operative recovery time. Although this may vary based on your particular lifestyle, here are some tips I give my patients before their breast augmentation procedure:

  1. Get Your Resting Area Ready
Aside from going to the bathroom, kitchen, or brief walks to move your legs, there will be a decent amount of time spent on the couch or in bed for the first 48 to 72 hours of the procedure. A lot of pillows are a must since you’ll be required to sleep on your back for a couple of weeks. Some patients choose to set up a small recovery station so they can limit their movement during resting periods. For example, having tissues, your medications, the remote control, some reading material or an iPad and your cell phone charger in close proximity helps avoid getting up at times that you don’t feel up to it.
  1. Have Your Medication Ready
After your surgery, you will have prescription medications to take to alleviate pain and avoid infections, including antibiotics and pain medication. I personally give my patients their prescriptions a couple of weeks before their surgery during their pre-operative visit, so the medication can be filled and ready before the surgery even begins.
  2. Treat Yourself to a Comfortable Wardrobe
A breast augmentation may cause pain and discomfort for a couple of weeks. It may help to have comfortable clothing that is easily taken on and off. For example, clothes that have zippers as opposed to t-shirts may be ideal so you don’t have to struggle taking clothes off over your head.
  3. Rely on Helping Hands
Depending on your lifestyle, you may need a family member or friend’s help during your recovery period. Especially if you have children or pets that need to be cared for. Having a helping hand can greatly reduce additional stress so you can feel better as soon as possible.

These are just four tips that can help you have a smooth recovery, there are many other great tips and tricks that patients have come up with as well. Got any tips I missed? Post them on our facebook page and let us know what helped make your recovery smooth. Looking to have Breast Augmentation surgery yourself?
